Poor House, 1995
Kraft paper, PVA glue, electric fan
This work was one of the contributions from First Draft to the Critical Spaces exhibition curated by Nick Tsoutas at Artspace in 1995. The exhibition brought together artists represtenting a number of artist-run-galleries in Sydney, the exhibition examined the role of artist-run-spaces in the broader art world. For my contribution, Poor Space, a cast in paper was taken from a fireplace in First Draft (West), in Annandale. I also made a thin wall by producing a paper cast from timber panels, the wall was gently wafted by a fan installed in the space. The wall was positioned in such a way, as to make an intimate, room-like space. As in several previous works, there was a desire to work with fragments of memory, the intention here was to create a certain ambience or mood, a kind of mnemonic space.
