Pocket Mountains, 1999
Materials: photographic prints, polymer clay
This work was part of an artist initiated, site-specific project called Oblique which was situated in Otira, a former railway town in the south island of New Zealand. The miniature mountains are based on the mountains that encircle the town of Otira. The work was portable, fitting in my pockets, so that they could be taken out and shown as a talking point to generate conversations with locals and other the other artists involved in the project. The photograph on the left shows the collection of pocket mountains photographed on a car top, with the represented mountains beyond them.
