Trichotillomania, 1998

Materials: Hair, pins, paper, plastic box, chocolate box, cigar box

Highly commended, Helen Lempriere Exhibition at Artspace, Sydney

Trichotillomania is the psychiatric term for a disorder of impulse control, where a person pulls out their own hair, strand by strand. These three small boxes contain assortments of strangely twisted hair; in one, the coiled, tortured hair is pinned out at regular intervals in a cigar box, like an array of insect specimens.
